Korean-Australian sisters are full scholars at the Juilliard school.
Viola major Lisa Sung (20) won Juilliard’s most prestigious scholarship after winning a perfect score in her audition two years ago, and younger sister Sarah (18) also has recently won a full scholarship to Juilliard. Sarah will move to New York this coming August to start at Juilliard. It is the first time in Juilliard history to have two Korean sisters majoring in the viola with full scholarships.
Last month, older sister Lisa was in England for the 12th Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition where she won a special prize. This large international viola competition is held every three years in honor of the famous British violist, Lionel Tertis (1976-1975).
The sisters are similar in their acceptance into Juilliard. After graduating from MLC, one of Australia's top prestigious private girls’ schools, on a full scholarship, Lisa was accepted into all four prestigious music schools in the United States, including Juilliard, Curtis, Manhattan School of Music, and Boston’s New England Conservatory. However, she chose Juilliard as she was awarded the Kovner Fellowship scholarship, which is sponsored by the Juilliard Chairman Bruce Kovner, which was established in September 2013, by his donation of $60 million (about KRW 69.7 billion).
Younger sister Sarah was also selected as a full scholarship student at MLC and completed middle and high school courses with no tuition costs. Together with Juilliard, she won full scholarships to the Manhattan School of Music, the New England Conservatory in Boston, and the Sydney Conservatory of Music. However, she decided to go to Juilliard with her older sister.
The older sister Lisa receives US$58,000 (about 63.72 million won) scholarship every year for four years, including not only tuition, but also living expenses, stipend, and other costs. Sarah also receives a scholarship of US$42,000 dollars (about 47.75 million won) during her undergraduate years, covering her full tuition. This means that Juilliard invests over $100,000 a year in the sisters.
Lisa started playing the violin when she was 4 years old. In 2002, when she was 6 years old, she immigrated to Australia with family. A musical prodigy from an early age, she started the viola at the age of 11, encouraged by her Professor Alex Todicescu, a professor at the Sydney Conservatory of Music. In the same year, she performed in front of then Prime Minister of Australia, John Howard.
The sisters are immersed in concert tours and volunteer work.
Lisa says, "My dream is to become a famous musician and travel around the world and serve the community." Sarah says, "I want to establish an organization that gives hope to young students who love and want to learn music even in difficult circumstances.”
Molly Kim, their mother who graduated from Ewha Womans University's Department of Music, raised her two daughters into the best musicians. Currently working as a music teacher at Sydney's private school, Santa Sabina College, she has been active as a role model, nurturing her two daughters' musical personality from an early age and providing direct instruction.
Kim says, "I hope that my two daughters will succeed and become famous performers like the Chung Myung-Wha siblings, and rise to the international stage to raise the status of Koreans."

성리사·세라, 2년 차이로 잇달아 합격…한인 첫 사례
(서울=연합뉴스) 왕길환 기자 = 호주동포 1.5세 자매가 미국의 명문 음악대학인 줄리아드에 잇달아 전액 장학금을 받고 입학해 화제다.
비올라를 전공하는 언니 성리사(20)는 2년 전 줄리아드 입학 오디션에서 심사위원 전원일치로 만점을 받아 전액 장학생으로 선발됐고, 동생 세라(18)도 같은 학과에 도전해 전액 장학생으로 합격했다.
세라 양은 오는 8월 24일 뉴욕에 도착해 27일 줄리아드에 입학한다. 한인 자매가 비올라로 같은 대학에 전액 장학금을 받고 입학한 사례는 처음인 것으로 전해졌다.
언니는 지난달 12∼19일 영국 맨 섬에서 열린 '제12회 라이오넬 터티스 국제 비올라 컴피티션'에서 특별상을 받는 쾌거를 이뤘다. 국제 비올라 대회로는 가장 규모가 큰 이 대회는 영국의 유명한 비올리스트였던 라이오넬 터티스(1876∼1975)를 기려 3년마다 열린다.

자매는 줄리아드 입학 과정부터 비슷하다.
호주에서 손꼽히는 명문 여자 사립학교 MLC를 전액 장학생으로 졸업한 언니는 줄리아드를 비롯해 커티스와 맨해튼 음대, 보스턴 뉴잉글랜드 콘서버토리움 등 미국 동부 지역 4개 명문 음대에 모두 합격했다. 그러나 줄리아드 이사장 브루스 코브너가 6천만 달러(약 697억 원)의 장학금을 기부해 신설한 '코브너 펠로십 프로그램'에 뽑히면서 이 대학을 선택했다.
동생 세라도 MLC에 전액 장학생으로 선발돼 무료로 중·고교 과정을 마쳤다. 줄리아드와 함께 맨해튼 음대, 보스턴 뉴잉글랜드 콘서버토리움, 시드니 음대에 응시해 모두 장학생으로 선발됐다. 하지만, 언니가 있는 줄리아드에 진학하기로 결정했다.
언니는 학비뿐만 아니라 생활비와 기숙사비, 용돈 등 매년 5만8천 달러(약 6천372만 원)의 장학금을 4년 동안 받고, 졸업 후 진로도 줄리아드 측에서 전폭적으로 지원해주겠다는 약속을 받았다. 동생도 학비 4만2천 달러(약 4천775만원)의 장학금을 학부 기간에 받는다. 줄리아드는 자매에게 연간 10만 달러(약 1억1천612만 원)를 투자하는 셈이다.
언니 리사는 4살 때 바이올린을 시작했다. 6살 때이던 2002년 부모를 따라 동생과 함께 호주에 이민했다. 어렸을 때부터 두각을 나타낸 그는 개인적으로 사사했던 알렉스 토디세스쿠 시드니 음대 교수의 조언으로 11살 때 비올라로 바꿨다. 같은 해 존 하워드 당시 호주 총리 앞에서 연주하기도 했다.
동생 세라는 5살에 시드니 콘서버토리 교수였던 토디체스쿠 교수를 사사했고, 지금은 시드니 심포니 오케스트라 선임 비올리스트인 토비아스의 지도를 받고 있다. 그동안 시드니 오페라 하우스, 뉴욕 카네기홀, 주미 호주 대사관 등에서 학교를 대표해 솔로로 연주했다. 시드니 2MBS-FM에서 주최하는 학생 연주자로 선발돼 생방송으로 연주하기도 했다.
독실한 크리스천인 자매는 봉사활동도 적극적으로 했다. 호주 200여 개의 양로원을 비롯해 학교, 교도소, 병원 등을 방문해 연주하며 아름다운 선율을 선사했다.

자매는 연주 여행과 봉사에 몰두하며 후학을 양성하겠다는 꿈을 키우고 있다.
리사는 "21살 때 뉴욕 필하모닉의 악장이 된 비올리스트 폴 뉴바우어처럼 유명한 연주자가 돼 전 세계 연주 여행을 하며 봉사하는 것이 꿈"이라고 밝혔다.
동생은 "어려운 환경 속에서도 음악을 사랑하고, 배우려는 젊은 학생들에게 희망을 주는 자선 음악학교를 설립하고 싶다"며 "앞으로 자선 활동과 음악 봉사에 더 많이 참여하겠다"고 포부를 밝혔다.
자매를 음악 최고의 특기생으로 키운 데는 이화여대 음대 피아노과를 졸업한 모친 김미형 씨의 뒷바라지가 있었다. 현재 시드니 산타 사비나 고등학교에서 피아노 교사로 근무하는 그는 두 딸이 어릴 때부터 음악 인성 및 감각을 키워주고, 직접 지도를 하는 등 동반자이자 지도자로 활약했다.
대전 출신인 김 씨는 대학 졸업 후 영국계 기업의 한국 지사장으로 근무하던 호주동포 1.5세인 남편을 만나 결혼했다.
김 씨는 "두 딸이 줄리아드가 거는 기대만큼 훌륭하게 성장해 정명화 남매와 같은 유명한 연주자가 돼 국제무대에 올라 한국인의 위상을 높였으면 좋겠다"고 희망했다.
