A Viola student has set a new record by achieving a perfect score from the 9 judges at the audition for the Juilliard School. Lisa Sung, a recent graduate of Australia’s prestigious private high school, MLC Sydney, has been accepted into Juilliard with the most elite scholarship called the Kovner Fellowship. This scholarship is a new program that was founded last September of 2013 thanks to the donation of US$60 million by the school’s chairman of the Board of Trustees, Mr. Bruce Kovner. This scholarship program is reserved for top applicants, and is awarded merit-based rather than financial aid.

Lisa got acceptance from other major music schools, including the Curtis Institute, Manhattan School of Music and the New England Conservatory, all with full scholarships. She chose Juilliard as the US$58,000 full sponsorship package covers all school tuition, living costs, and related extras fees, renewed yearly for her full four years of Bachelor of Music degree.

She is currently attending the private high school MLC School on a full scholarship (totaling $24,000 per year). Because of her extraordinary musical talent, she has attended middle school, high school, and college, without having to pay tuition.

Lisa started to play violin at the age of three much influenced by her pianist mother who is a graduate of Ewha Women’s University. She then picked up the viola at age eleven with the recommendation by her teacher Alex Todicescu, and had the honor of playing for the Australian then-Prime Minister, John Howard that same year. She says “I very much respect violist Paul Neubauer who, at age 21, was the youngest ever Principal Violist of the New York Philharmonic and is currently a professor at Juilliard. I wish to follow his footsteps and become a world-class musician like him performing around the world.”

호주 교포 여학생, 줄리아드음대 만점 입학

(시드니=연합뉴스) 정열 특파원 = 비올라를 전공하는 호주 교포 여학생이 입학 오디션에서 심사위원 전원일치 만점을 받고 미국 줄리아드 음대에 전액 장학생으로 선발돼 화제다.

화제의 주인공은 호주에서 손꼽히는 명문 여자 사립학교 MLC를 전액 장학생으로 졸업한 성리사(18) 양이다.

성 양은 올해 초 치러진 뉴욕 줄리아드 음대 입학 오디션에서 심사위원 9명 전원으로부터 만점을 받아 비올라 전공 신입생 중 유일하게 전액 장학금 혜택을 받게 됐다.

행운도 따랐다. 9월에 입학하는 성 양이 받게 될 장학금은 이 학교 이사장인 브루스 코브너가 지난해 10월 6천만 달러(약 607억 원)의 장학금을 기부하면서 신설된 '코브너 펠로십 프로그램'의 일환이다.

이 장학금은 가정형편이 어려운 학생에게 주는 것이 아니라 전적으로 실력과 성적이 뛰어난 학생에게만 주도록 한 것이 특징이다.

최근 수년간 인재들이 전액 장학금 혜택을 주는 라이벌 커티스 음대로 쏠리는 현상이 나타나자 줄리아드가 인재 유치를 위해 내세운 고육책이다.

성 양은 줄리아드뿐 아니라 커티스와 맨해튼 음대, 뉴잉글랜드 컨서바토리움 등 미국 동부 지역 4개 명문 음대에 모두 합격했지만 고심 끝에 전폭적 지원을 약속한 줄리아드를 택했다.

성 양은 2일 "입학생에게 전액 장학금 혜택을 줄 뿐 아니라 음악계에서 최고의 명문으로 꼽는 커티스 음대를 포기하는 것이 아쉬웠지만, 졸업 후 진로 등 여러 가지를 종합적으로 고려한 끝에 어렸을 때부터의 꿈이던 줄리아드를 선택하게 됐다"고 말했다.

커티스는 대학원 과정이 없는 반면 줄리아드는 대학원 과정이 있어 연속성을 가지고 공부할 수 있는 환경인 것도 고려 대상이 됐다.

성 양은 학비뿐 아니라 생활비와 기숙사비, 용돈 등 매년 5만 8천 달러(약 5천900만 원)의 장학금을 4년 동안 받게 되며 졸업 후 진로도 줄리아드 측에서 전폭적으로 지원해주겠다는 약속을 받았다.

연간 학비가 2만 5천 호주달러(약 2천400만 원)에 달하는 MLC도 6년 전액 장학생으로 다닌 성 양은 뛰어난 재능 덕에 비싼 학비를 전혀 들이지 않고 중·고·대학 과정을 이수하게 된 셈이다.

4살 때부터 바이올린을 시작한 성 양이 음악을 전공하게 된 것은 이화여대 음대를 졸업한 모친 김미형 씨의 영향이 컸다.

김 씨는 대학 졸업 후 호주 교포이자 영국계 기업의 한국지사장으로 근무하던 남편을 만나 결혼하고 성 양이 6살 때이던 2002년 호주에 이민을 왔다.

어렸을 때부터 두각을 나타낸 성 양은 개인적으로 사사했던 알렉스 토디세스쿠 시드니 음대 교수의 조언으로 11살 때부터 비올라를 시작했으며 같은 해 존 하워드 당시 호주 총리 앞에서 연주하기도 했다.

성 양은 "21살 때 뉴욕 필하모닉의 악장이 됐던 유명 비올리스트이자 현재 줄리아드 음대 교수이기도 한 폴 뉴바우어를 존경한다"며 "유명 연주자가 돼 전 세계 연주여행을 하는 것이 꿈"이라고 말했다.
