“Music Scholar from MLC School to Juilliard”

“Technique is fundamental, but you need to enhance it with your unique color to move the audience, so it’s very important to find the joy in performing.”

Students of the prestigious Juilliard School, sisters Lisa and Sarah Sung, gives points on how to become a great musician, stating that the most important above all in order to move the hearts of the listeners is to “have your own personality in your playing.”

Lisa Sung immigrated to Australia at age 6, and graduated from Sydney’s prestigious private high school MLC as a music scholar, and is currently a full scholar at Juilliard. Lisa finished her third year, and her sister, Sarah just finished her first year at Juilliard where she also has a full scholarship and majors in the viola.

Lisa’s scholarship is Juilliard’s most prestigious scholarship — the Kovner Fellowship — and with Sarah’s full scholarship, these sisters’ scholarships total over US$100,000 per year.

Lisa, Juilliard Orchestra Principal Violist

Lisa is currently serving as a principal violist of the Juilliard Orchestra. Last year during her sophomore year, she competed in the Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition and won a special prize, and won second prize in Vivo International Music Competition. In her high school years in 10th and 11th grades, she twice won the NSW Secondary Schools Concerto Competition and performed as a soloist with the Ku-Ring-Gai Philharmonic Orchestra. This August, she will perform again as a soloist with that Orchestra.

For Sarah, while she was in her 9th grade, she won first prize in the Korean-Australian Music Association Competition in 2012. In the 11th grade, she was the winner out of 5,000 HSC music students in Sydney, NSW, and performed solo at the Sydney Opera House.

Sarah: “I want to run a foundation that delivers hope through music education”

“The Juilliard School of Music strives to create true artists who understand music. Being located in the heart of the arts at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in Manhattan, the environment is always a part of the arts,” says Sarah.
Lisa says, “The competition is very fierce because top students from all over the world gather, but it’s good to help each other and learn while working hard.”

Lisa advises juniors who wish to major in music, “always maintain a positive attitude, practice hard, and be humble.” Sarah urged, "Be confident in your abilities and focus on your goals."

Lisa plans to go to graduate school after she graduates in May next year. Her hope for the future is to “tour the world while performing.”

Sarah says, “I want to create and operate a foundation or organization that can deliver hope through music education to refugees who have difficulty accessing music. My heart goes to North Korea in particular.

“I looked into everything like a pioneer because of the lack of information about entrance exams”

These are the two daughters of Sung and Kim. Mi Hyung Kim, who majored in piano, is a music teacher at Santa Sabina College, Sydney.

Kim said the most difficult thing for her two daughters to enter the Juilliard School was the lack of admission information. Kim said, “When Lisa entered the school, it was very difficult without knowing anything. “I researched everything like a pioneer,” she said.

세계적인 명문 줄리어드 음대에 전액 장학생으로 입학한 호주 한인자녀 리사성(한국명 성리사, 21), 세라성(성세민, 19) 자매는 좋은 연주자가 되기 위해 가장 중요한 것으로 ‘자기만의 색깔과 듣는 사람의 마음을 움직이는 감동’을 꼽았다.

방학을 맞아 시드니로 돌아온 리사와 세라 자매는 22일 어머니 김미형 씨와 함께 한호일보 사옥을 방문했다.

리사가 6세 때 부모를 따라 호주로 이민온 이들은 시드니 명문 사립여고 MLC의 음악 전액 장학생을 거쳐 줄리어드 음대에서 풀스칼라십 장학생으로 나란히 입학해 화제를 모았다. 줄리어드 음대 3학년과 1학년을 마친 리사와 세라는 모두 비올라 전공자다.

리사가 받는 코브너펠로십(Kovner Fellowship) 장학금과 세라가 받는 등록금 면제 장학금을 합하면 연간 미화 10만 달러가 넘는다.

● 리사, 줄리어드오케스트라 비올라 악장으로 활동 = 리사는 줄리어드 음대 오케스트라에서 비올라 악장(principal violist)을 맡으며 이미 능력을 인정받고 있다. 2학년 때 터티스국제비올라대회(Tertis International Viola Competition)에 출전해 특별상을 받았고, 3학년 때 비보국제음악대회(Vivo International Music Competition)에서 2위로 입상했다.
고교 10학년과 11학년 재학시 쿠링가이필하모닉오케스트라 주최 NSW 중고등학생 협연 대회에서 2년 연속 우승했다. 이런 인연으로 리사는 오는 8월 말 쿠링가이필하모닉오케스트라와 협연할 예정이다.

세라는 9학년 때 호주한인문화재단의 ‘2012년 호주 한인 청소년 클래식 음악 경연대회’에서 우승했다. 11학년 때는 12학년생들과 함께 대입수능시험(HSC)앵콜콘서트에서 연주했다.
● 세라 “음악 교육 통해 희망 전할 재단 운영하고 싶어” = 이들은 “줄리어드 음대는 음악을 이해하는 진정한 예술가를 만들기 위해 노력한다. 맨해튼의 링컨공연센터 내 예술의 중심지에 위치해 있어서 항상 예술의 일부분인 환경이 장점”이라고 밝혔다.

리사는 “세계 각지의 최상위 학생들이 모이니까 경쟁이 매우 치열한 반면 열심히 하면서 서로 도와주고 배우기도 좋다”고 설명했다.
리사는 음악 전공을 희망하는 후배들에게 “항상 긍정적인 자세를 유지하고, 열심히 연습하며, 겸손할 것”을 조언했다. 세라는 “스스로의 능력에 자신감을 갖고 본인의 목표에 집중할 것”을 당부했다.

리사는 내년 5월 대학원에 진학할 예정이다. 그리고 “전세계를 투어하면서 음악 활동을 하는 것”이 장래 희망이다.
세라는 “음악을 접하기 힘든 난민이나 빈곤층에게 음악 교육을 통해 희망을 전해줄 수 있는 재단이나 조직을 만들어 운영하고 싶다. 특히 북한에 마음이 간다. 가능하면 북한을 방문할 것 같다”고 포부를 밝혔다.

● “입시 정보 부족해 개척자처럼 모든 것 알아봤다” = 이들은 성영창-김미형 부부의 두 딸이다. 피아노를 전공한 김미형 씨는 시드니 산타사비나칼리지의 음악교사다.
김 씨는 두 딸이 줄리어드 음대에 입학하기까지 가장 어려웠던 점으로 입시 정보 부족을 꼽았다. 김 씨는 “리사가 입학할 때는 아무 것도 모르는 상태에서 매우 힘들었다. 개척자처럼 모든 것을 알아봤다”고 말했다.

줄리어드 음대의 입시전형은 실기 녹음 제출(pre-screening), 실기 오디션(live audition), 서류 평가의 과정을 거친다.

실기 녹음 제출은 줄리어드에서 지정한 곡을 호주에서 녹음해 줄리어드로 보내 평가받는 것이다. 이 때 연주곡과 스튜디오를 잘 선택해서 양질의 녹음을 하도록 신경써야 한다.
실기 녹음 제출 평가를 통과하면 다음 단계인 실기 오디션에 초청받는다. 실기 오디션은 뉴욕 줄리어드 음대를 방문해 교수들 앞에서 3곡을 연주한다.

마지막은 에세이와 고등학교 성적표 등을 제출하는 서류 전형이다. 에세이는 음악 관련된 주제가 주어지며 9~12학년 성적을 제출해야 한다.
